3 MU Monday

The week is whizzing by, as usual – these four day work weeks are luxurious but also make it difficult to fit everything in!

Strangely, I had a bad sleep Sunday night, so I was pretty exhausted all Monday.  I could barely put together a sentence, so you can imagine being a functioning adult was a bit hard.

Regardless, because I’m a glutton for punishment, I headed to the 4 PM class at Sunalta.  The WOD looked fun!

I worked to 95# for my heaviest touch-n-go clean and jerk, and practiced my ring pull-ups (sans bands).  I did 4 rounds, then had to resort to the pull-up bar.

17 minutes went by fairly quickly.  I did the mandatory 10 double under attempts, then did 300 singles.  With Anna’s encouragement, I practiced muscle ups on the bar with a box underneath to give me some height.  I did all my muscle ups this way and hardly felt afraid!  Previously, I’ve been unable to get up on the bar because I was scared of… falling?  I’m not sure what I was afraid of before.  The kettlebell swings took forever, but I made sure to do 10 reps before breaks.  Box jumps were a sweaty slog.  And I was 70 reps in to the walking lunges when 17 minutes was up.  Nice little workout!

I chatted a bit after class with Anna and Megan, then headed home for supper (leftover chicken thighs and kale salad from Sunday), then off to see a movie – Trainwreck – with Haley.  It was so hilarious!  I laughed until I cried at the end.  Partly because Haley was cracking up – you have to laugh equally as hard as your sister in moments of hysteria.  That’s our relationship anyways.

As the movie was ending, I started to feel a migraine coming on but hoped that if I fell asleep, it would just fade away.  Unfortunately, I woke up around 1 unable to sleep because of the migraine and also because I think I had food poisoning.  I tossed and turned until 3:30, and took some Advil, then somehow fell back asleep until 7.

Clearly, today I’m still a bit exhausted from being up in the night, and my stomach is rather unhappy.  I’m blaming the chicken thighs because there’s nothing else to blame.  Ugh, food poisoning is the worst!

Work today was full of deadlines which contributed to how tired I feel, but I have to stay awake because there are squats after work and then volleyball later this evening.  I can’t let the team down!

CrossFit Games Weekend

Well that post went up a little before I had planned!

Friday

In the evening, Dana took me on a date to see Paper Towns.  I have to admit I was a little disappointed in the movie, but it was still entertaining and I always enjoy a good date night!

We were on the fence all evening about going on a hike Saturday with a coworker of mine.  Unfortunately for him, we backed out as we knew we had lots on the go on Saturday.  We watched some CrossFit Games highlights before bed and then slept like babes after the busy week.

Saturday

We read Coach Emily’s raw Games update on the Blonyx blog before heading to Sunalta.  Notably, the post has since been removed since yesterday.  Perhaps it was a little too honest?  I don’t blame Em for what she said in her interview – the Friday Games’ workouts were more than borderline crazy, and I wasn’t even in the stadium watching in the LA heat.

Politics aside, here was Saturday’s agenda:

Nancy is another one of those CrossFit benchmark workouts.  The class was the smallest Saturday AM class I’ve ever seen!  Perhaps the small class size was related to Nancy?

The beginning EMOM was almost like a little metcon in itself.  We were all breathing heavy by the end with some sweat dripping.  I used a blue band for all my pull-ups and worked on my double unders.  Couldn’t seem to string any together yesterday though.

Nancy was just… enjoyable.  Seeing as I haven’t done an overhead squat in FOREVER, I loaded 55# on the bar.  Which quickly became 45# after I realized what 55# felt like.  With my ego in check, the metcon was pretty fun.  I finished in 16:45. I think next time I could use 55# as some sets of squats were unbroken. Note to self: next time remember my wrist wraps.

We headed home after some socializing at Sunalta for some lunch and more Games on TV. Dana packed for his work trip and I kept busy around the house.

Around 3:30, we were heading out of the house for my hair appointment for fam photos when Dana’s sister called him to say photos were being rescheduled because of rain. I had to pay for my hair appointment regardless because of lack of notice so we proceeded there anyways and I booked a dinner reservation at Cassis while Dana drove.

My blow out was at Butter Beauty Parlour in Mission. Worth the money! I had a girl named Alex and she was really great.

We headed to Chestermere for family photos to avoid the rain, as the next date that worked for everyone (if we rescheduled) would be in October.  I hope we got some good shots! After, we had our picnic meals at Susan and Ty’s and visited.

I had lots of fun playing with my nephew Kade! Bailey was looking cute as ever in a little summer dress and matching head band.

From Chestermere, we zipped home for game night at our house with Haley and our cousin Dailyn.

They made me play two games of Settlers of Catan. One is more than enough for me!  Don’t worry, my 11 game losing streak is still going strong.

I have never won at Catan.  It seems doubtful I will ever win.

After the girls left at midnight, I was exhausted!  Again, slept like the dead.

Today

My Sunday has been go-go-go too!  Dana and I watched some CF Games on Youtube while he finished packing, and then I had a quick breakfast and drove Dana to the airport.

From the airport, I drove down to McKenzie Town to visit the infamous Fit Kitchen.  McKenzie Town is not exactly convenient for me, but I figured a little drive was better than cooking all day!

I picked up three lunches and three suppers for the week as I’m only cooking for myself this week.  Everything sounds really tasty!  I love the idea of Fit Kitchen – they cook healthy meals with full nutritional information listed.  Sounds like a simple concept, but it’s hard to find in good ol’ Calgary!  Really great meals for athletes especially.

After a quick stop at Sobey’s for smoothie ingredients, I drove home and quickly threw some leftovers together for lunch.  I enjoyed these while catching up on Games and Em’s successes.  She is doing amazing!  After watching Castro’s announcement of the final event, I decided to get a few chores done… vacuuming, laundry, dusting, cleaning the kitchen, etc.

Now I’m blogging and watching the final event of the Games!  So excited for Emily and hope that it goes well for her!

Quadzilla Runs

Yesterday was a really nice day.  After work, I headed to the 4 PM class at Sunalta.  I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that Coach Eric had programmed MORE SQUATS.  I was still sore from Monday’s!

My 94% of the first day of the squat program worked out to 85#.  The squats were painful with my sore, sore legs!  Coach Tim says that I won’t be hurting so badly as the program goes on and my body adjusts to the volume of squats.  Hatch was all about building to maxes in small sets; this program is high volume to build endurance.  And big quads.  I will definitely need to buy new pants after.

With 55# on my bar and 100 singles instead of doubles, I did the WOD in 8:10.  Everyone else took at least 2 minutes longer, which would be an indicator I should have RX’ed it.  I certainly can push press 65#, but if I did doubles, I would be doing the WOD forever!  Nice little WOD though for those of us with sore knees.

Dana’s sciatic nerve was bugging him, so he skipped class and biked over after to Sunalta.  After I rinsed off, we drove out to Cochrane for dinner with Dana’s family.  It was so nice to see Dana’s grandma, auntie, and cousins – a lot of time had passed between visits and we were over-due to catch up.  Jenna, Nathan, and Bailey came out too for supper.  As usual, Bailey was the star.  She is so adorable!  Supper was very tasty and hit the spot after my workout.  We played a few rounds of Balderdash then had to dash out the door to drive to the airport.  Dana’s high school friend is in town for the weekend and staying with us.

I was pretty tired by the time we got home, about 11:30.  Dana stayed up to visit, but I hit the hay!

Today

When I woke up today, of course my legs were still hurting from squats.  I bought new Nikes this week though, and was eager to put them to work.  I had a spoonful of MCT oil, then headed out for a quick run around the neighbourhood.  My legs didn’t feel too awful once I got running, and I was only a bit tired from my short sleep.

My quick run turned in to a little over 3 miles and I was utterly surprised to get a few little notifications from my Nike app when I got home.  I PR’ed a few distances!

  • Fastest 1 km – 5:12
  • Fastest 1 mile – 8:23
  • Fastest 5 km – 27:06

I realize those numbers aren’t fast for a runner-runner, but for me, I was pretty pumped!

Quick shower after, then I went to book a car2go so I could drive to the Loop for breakfast with BFF Mal.  Unfortunately, the car I’d had my eye on prior to running had driven away.  I texted Mal to see if she could give me a lift, but when I didn’t hear back from her, I started walking towards the only other car2go in the neighbourhood which was about a 15 minute walk away.  Luckily Mal called me to say she’d pick me up, so together we zipped over to the Loop.

We had a lovely time catching up and had a delicious breakfast spread.  I ate like a woman starved after my run – chicken sausage, hashbrowns, and a pile of fruit.  And coffee.  Lots of coffee. Mal kindly drove me downtown for my next social outing – lunch with my old CMA friends from the SLP program.

Lunch was at the ol’ Oriental Phoenix downtown.  I had fun visiting with Michelle and Jeff while eating a pile of vermicelli noodles.  We survived the CMA SLP program together and I owe a lot to them!

From downtown, I car2go’ed home to watch more of the 2015 CrossFit Games.  Murph is on the TV as I write this – crazy to watch elite athletes tackle this classic CrossFit workout RX’ed with a weight vest.  In that crazy hot stadium in Carson, California!  I would die!  It’s comical to me how much I’m enjoying watching the Games this year – me?  Watching sports?  Enjoying it?

There’s discussion of tomorrow being a quick hike day, before family photos with Dana’s fam.  We’ll see where the weekend takes us!
