Weekend Gainz

Am I the only one who wishes all weekends were at least three days? These two day weekends are not enough time to get ALL THE THINGS done.

Dana and I hit up the 4 PM crossfit class after work.

I was pretty sore from Thursday but the back squats felt pretty good. 100#, and some plyo push-up practice. My shoulders were too tired for more handstand push-ups!

The WOD was just quick, but still made me roll my eyes a bit. I was slow but steady on box jumps, and did the kettlebell swings unbroken (RX), but had to break the thrusters up. Why do thrusters never get easier? More than anything, the pull-ups are the part that slay me! I insisted on using a blue band and doing them strict, but they took FOREVER. I probably took two whole minutes to struggle through 10 pull-ups. I can’t wait until I have the strength/coordination to kip! Finished somewhere in the ballpark of 7:50 but ended slightly frustrated.

After, we took Mara for a huge walk and enjoyed the fall leaves in the neighbourhood. Then I took slightly longer than I should’ve to get ready, and we headed to Cassis for our date. It was fabulous as always! We started with the olives and lamb merguez sausage, and Dana had the mushroom soup. For mains, Dana had the lamb and I had my favorite steak frites. To finish, we had something called a religieuse (I think) which involved cream puffs, chocolate sauce, and hazelnuts.   Dana handled the cream puffs, and I basically licked the plate clean – that chocolate sauce was too good!

I had great intentions of staying up late and watching a movie with Dana, but ended up falling asleep around 10. Whoops!

Mara and I had a quick walk around the block, then I headed to crossfit. Megan and I teamed up for this partner WOD:

We both snatched 70#. I felt a bit more confident with Em’s workshop under my belt, but not brave enough to go much heavier. My first reaction when snatching anything heavier than 65# is to muscle snatch it…

We scaled the clean and jerk to 85# and knocked out 38 reps. Probably could have done RX, but my shoulder was feeling kind of sore so I’m glad we went a bit lighter.

The sprints were fun – I did three 200’s and Meg did 2+150m. When it’s only five minutes and you have a teammate, you can motivate yourself to go pretty fast!

After a bit of post-class visiting, I headed home to clean up and then we went to get groceries from the farmers’ market. We’ve scaled back a bit with our spending there, but it seems a shame to stop shopping there when it’s prime time for Alberta produce.

We went home to put together a Greek salad as our contribution towards dinner, then grabbed Mara and headed out to Cochrane for a visit with Dana’s parents, before driving out further to visit one of Dana’s old coworkers. She made a huge pile of BBQ ribs for dinner and we all ate like kings! We had a fun night with lots of visiting, and then I drove us home around 11:30. At least the moon was bright to help me see on the way home!

Bright and early, we took Mara for a big walk by the reservoir, and then got ready and drove to the airport to pick Dana’s sister and family up. We had a nice time visiting as we drove them home, and Mara was beyond happy to have her humans home. I think I’ve read that dogs have no concept of time, so I’m pretty sure Mara thought they’d abandoned her forever.

We had a late lunch at home and then proceeded to do a bunch of cleaning in preparation for our dinner guests. Haley and her new-ish boyfriend came over, as well as Megan and her husband Wade. I made my go-to company meal of Jamie Oliver’s roast chicken and potatoes, along with new-to-me Ottolenghi roasted carrots with tahini yogurt.

Those carrots are so amazing! I wished I had made double the recipe (and in the future I will!). For dessert, we had a slow-cooker paleo chocolate chip cookie. The recipe has a crazy amount of sugar in it, so it was not surprising that it was very tasty and addictive.

We had a great time with many laughs and (I hope that) everyone left full and happy. After the busy day of cleaning and cooking, I crashed hard as soon as everyone headed home.

Today is a big deadline day at work, but I’m really looking forward to the WOD after work. It’s up my alley! Power cleans, back squats, burpees… I’m also excited because my coworker/friend, Colin, has decided to come back to Sunalta so he’s joining Dana and I after work. #drankallthekoolaid

How was your weekend? What were the highlights?

Friday Faves: Week Numero 2

There have been lots of things this week that made me smile!  Plus, the weekend starts in mere hours so that alone makes me feel like:

Movie date on Wednesday

Let me tell you, climbing Mount Everest is not even remotely on my bucket list.  Especially after seeing “Everest” this week!  Dana had read the book it was based on, and wanted to see it in IMAX 3D, which was as intense as it could possibly be.  The movie was pretty interesting but I 110% never even want to climb to Base Camp.

Reading “The Martian”

So here’s the thing – Dana is not really a laugh-out-loud guy.  He’s got a great sense of humour, and likes funny things, but basically him making an audible laugh is like seeing a unicorn.  “The Martian”?  Dana burst out laughing multiple times while reading it.  So of course I was dying to read it as soon as he was done so I could understand what was so funny!

And it is funny!  I’m only about 10% done, but it’s made me laugh multiple times.  It’s kind of math/science-y at times, but I like the concept of the book.  I’m sure we’ll see the movie when it comes out!

Date night tonight at Cassis Bistro

Favorite restaurant in Calgary, hands down.  I always order the steak frites and devour the entire plate.  Don’t judge me.

Learning how to budget

Although Dana got a package when he was laid off, due to the uncertainty of how long it will be until he is gainfully employed again, we’ve adopted a strict family budget.  As we’re both huge foodies, in the past, we’ve always blown our (less rigid) budget on eating out, dates, and groceries.  I’m really proud to say that this month we’ve kept our grocery and date night budgets within the parameters we set for ourselves.  Yay us!

Long walks with Mara

Dogsitting Mara has gotten us off our asses  the couch and out on many walks after work.  Last night we walked her for an hour, after our workout.  All three of us were exhausted after!  But the great kind of exhaustion that comes from good conversation, exercise, and a warm fall evening.

Changing fall leaves

I’m not a pumpkin spice girl (don’t hate me) but I do love the changing of the seasons.  The leaves in Calgary are very colorful right and the city is beautiful!

This always makes me laugh even though I’m not even all about the pumpkin pie:

Handstand push-ups for the win! Plus feeling comfortable doing snatches/overhead squats!

This was Thursday’s programming from Sunalta.  I worked to 105# for the push press.  The dragon flags are supposed to look like this:

Although I can certainly get vertical like a gymnast, lowering myself with grace proved difficult.  I’ll leave the dragon flags to Rocky.

The WOD was as long as it looks.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that I felt far more comfortable in overhead squats this week, largely due to the clinic on Saturday I’m sure.  Of course I only had 55# on the bar but WHATEVER.  Confidence is half the battle.  Or more.  The other thing that made me pumped was knocking out handstand push-ups like a boss.  RX.  Gainz!

Interesting blog reads:

And with that, I bid you adieu.  Enjoy the beautiful fall weekend!

Fall-y-ball & Cleans

Cheesy title, I know.

Wouldn’t you know cleans would be programmed conveniently after my Oly Lifting workshop on Saturday?  My glutes were still sore!  None-the-less, I worked up to my current PR of 115#.  Somehow adding even 5# to that seems unmanageable, but I really felt like I learned a thing or two on the weekend.  Of course, since we’re doing power cleans, I have to bang the crap out of my collar bone and quads (form just goes out the window sometimes).  So those bruises…

The box jumps involved a step leading up to the box (to gain momentum) then you jump.  I didn’t really build height, but just hit 30″ every time.  Or as I told Coach Eric afterwards: “the men’s height” on the box.  He laughed and first said “what?”, then “now it’s Kaitlyn’s height”.

The WOD was my jam!  8:51 and a pile of sweat.  I love this kind of WOD!  I used 85# and was glad I did.  The pull-ups weren’t too bad with a red (SKINNY) band.  I’m almost free of that sucker!  The final round was just a bit slower as I had to do singles for the STOH (shoulder to overhead) since my push press technique wore me out.  When will I learn to jerk it properly?

Monday night seems like a long time ago.  What did we even get up to after?  I believe we ate some of Dana’s chili, walked Mara, and finished watching “The F Word.”  I really love that movie and Daniel Radcliffe.

I had a whirlwind Tuesday at work!  To start my day off, I had a nice coffee with BFF Linds (damn the allowance anyways), then there was a fire drill (27 flights of stairs later…), and then I was off to my three hour lunch meeting at the Petroleum Club (a highlight of my month; well, the free lunch anyways).  I squeezed in a bit of actual accounting, and then it was off to Sunalta!

Then there was this delight after work:

I texted Meg earlier in the day to ask if the WOD before volleyball was crazy, but we agreed we’d both meet at the 4 PM.  #drankallthekoolaid

I kept my clean+thruster (AKA cluster) light at 85# and focused on being aggressive and bringing the bar higher on my leg.  The damn quad bruises don’t lie – clearly I’m not getting the bar high enough in the pull.  Today I’m really sore from the ring work!

Thinking of Karen, I dreaded the WOD all day.  I’m short.  Wall balls aren’t short person friendly.  But it was better than I thought!  The double unders/skipping in the middle helped break the wall balls up.  I finished in 7:42 and it wasn’t even that bad.

After crossfit, Dana and I drove Meg home, then frantically walked Mara, washed dishes, prepped for Wednesday, and ate dinner.  Then we were out the door to beach volleyball!  It was a little warmer than last week thankfully.  We seemed to figure out a better line configuration this week, and won two of our three games!  This probably makes me a bad person, but I like volleyball much better when I’m winning.  Haha!

We got home a bit before nine and played with Mara a bit while getting ready for bed.  We’re sure going to miss that hound when she goes home.  She got tired of waiting for us to put her to bed and put herself to bed, but I found her this morning curled up in a little ball in her bed.  Such a good dog!

Dana tells me today is a rest day but oh boy do I want to go to class!  Deadlifts are programmed and this girl loves some deads.

Instead, we’re hoping to visit with Jenna and Bailey, and then go see the “Everest” movie!

Hope you are having a great week!  The weekend is in sight now!
